Remembering the Sixties

Sixties memorabilia in a memory kit

Television dominated the Sixties. Here are some things that happened then: Freedom Riders, Martin Luther King, Jr., Sabin oral polio vaccine, soap box derbies, John (Jack) and Jackie Kennedy- inauguration and assassination of our youngest president, President Lyndon Johnson signed the Medicare Bill and Fair Housing Act, Vietnam War and protest marches, first man to walk on the moon, introduction to "Radarange" (microwaves). Movies included "The Sound of Music," "West Side Story," and "Mary Poppins." Popular songs on Dick Clark's American Band Stand included "The Twist," "If I Had a Hammer," and "This Land is Your Land." What about that Smiley face?

This Memory Kit was made possible in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services.
